The Gospel

Our world is broken. It’s broken because individual lives are broken. Is it possible to know that you are forgiven, made new and whole and clean inside, and that you are right with God? Yes. Is it possible to live a life of purpose and meaning and love and joy? Yes. Five words summarize how.

Heaven, forgiveness, being right with God, is a free gift. It cannot be earned or deserved.
Ephesians 2:8-9 – “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Human beings, you and me, are sinners and cannot save ourselves.
Romans 3:23 – “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

God loves us and doesn’t want to punish us, but He is also just and must punish sin.
Jeremiah 31:3 – “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”
Romans 6:23 – “The wages of sin is death.”
God solved this problem by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, into our world.

Jesus Christ
Who He is: The eternal God-man
What He did: Died on the cross to pay for our sins and purchase our salvation which He now offers to us as a gift.
2 Corinthians 5:21 – “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Romans 6:23 – “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We can receive this gift by faith.

What it is not: Mere intellectual assent.
What it is: Trusting in Jesus Christ alone for my salvation
Romans 10:9 – “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

That’s what we call the Gospel. If that makes sense to you, you can receive Christ’s gift of salvation, purpose, forgiveness, by telling God something like this: “Lord Jesus, I know I’m a sinner. Please forgive me and come into my life and save me.” It’s not the words that save you, it’s the trust and change of your heart.
